"Squirrel with Acorn"
Drawing with pencil and paper became my passion before I started to school. All through school I sketched my classmates and drew the heroes and heroines I saw in comic books, movies and TV. These included cowboys, superheroes, Tarzan and King Kong. With a hometown art instructor and later at East Carolina University, I learned to paint with oils and acrylics and admire fine art titans like Michelangelo and Leonardo. But a few years ago I noticed that successful fantasy artists like Frazetta and Vallejo were painting the same superheroes. So now I depict some of my old favorites again, just for the fun of it.
Some years ago I discovered colored pencils and they have become my favorite art medium. Now I teach classes in colored pencil art, techniques, wildlife and portraits. And I do some commissioned portraits.
I've served twice as Vice-President, once in an earlier incarnation of a colored pencil enthusiasts group, and more recently, during our first years as this official District Chapter 114 of the Colored Pencil Society of America.
Now that I am retired from being a corporate graphic designer/illustrator, my art students and members of this colored pencil chapter supply plenty of inspiration and enthusiasm for me.
